DENVER (KDVR) -- Colorado has one of the worst drug problems in the country, according to analysts, and the worst piece of the puzzle involves law enforcement. Financial advice site WalletHub's researchers analyzed three aspects of the issue - drug use, drug health issues and rehabilitation, and law enforcement. These include 20 separate metrics from federal and non-profit data such as the rates of teen and adult use, overdose rates and their recent growth, drug arrest rates and policies, and rehabilitation accessibility. Colorado had one of the highest drug abuse rates in 2021 Each metric was given a weighted score among U.S. states and lumped into an overall score. Colorado ranks 5th overall - just behind Louisiana and ahead of Missouri.Among the three broad categories, it isn't Colorado's drug use directly that makes it score so highly on the list of issues. Rescue crews have taken an elderly woman to the hospital after, authorities said, she was shot in Lauderdale Lakes, placing a nearby elementary school on lockdown. Deputies with the Broward Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene near North State Road 7 and Northwest 38th Street, Wednesday afternoon. Detectives said the shooting started in front of Park Lakes Elementary School and came to an end about 10 blocks away.As a result, the campus was placed on lockdown.According to officials, a woman in her 70s may have been caught in the middle of the crossfire while inside her car. The Wilton Manors Police Department is seeking help from the public in locating a missing man.Vernon Plummer, 63, of Wilton Manors, was last seen Saturday April 29 around 8 p.m. walking eastbound toward North Federal Highway, away from his residence, located in the 1800 block of NE 26 street. Plummer is a black male, weighs about 170 pounds and stands 6 feet tall. He was last seen wearing a yellow t-shirt and blue pants. According to police, he has some health concerns and “may be suffering from some form of a mental health episode,” and does not have his medication with him. Flames ripped through two apartment buildings, which caused several people to evacuate their homes. The flames shot from the door of a Plantation home, Wednesday morning.The apartment on Northwest 10th Place was fully engulfed. Thankfully, the family inside was able to get out safely.“It’s so sad, because the person whose apartment was ruined, she’s pregnant,” said Riah Lee, whose home was damaged. (CNN) — Police are searching for a gunman who shot five people Wednesday at Northside Hospital Medical in Midtown Atlanta, killing one person and sending four others to the hospital, according to the Atlanta Police Department.Multiple victims are undergoing surgery at Downtown’s Grady Memorial Hospital — Atlanta’s only Level 1 trauma center. Karen Read was back in court Wednesday amid accusations that she killed her boyfriend, who was also a Boston Police officer. A Lowell man spoke out this week after his attorneys said he secured one of the largest wrongful conviction settlements in New England history from the city of Lowell. Victor Rosario’s attorneys issued a statement on the matter on Tuesday, roughly 40 years after he was convicted of arson and murder, which he did not commit. Rosario spoke with reporters on Wednesday, at one point holding a photo of himself from 1983 on the day of his conviction. Rosario’s attorneys said the city of Lowell will pay $13 million dollars in its settlement with Rosario. “This 13 million dollars does not begin to compensate Victor for all that he has lost,” said attorney Locke Bowman. “But it reflects the acknowledgement of the city of Lowell that what happened wasn’t right.”Rosario said he was on scene trying to help victims of a fatal apartment fire on Decatur Street in Lowell back in 1982.
