A Ventura County jury convicted 83-year-old Carillo Chavez of Lompoc of five felony counts of lewd conduct and substantial sexual conduct with a child under age 14 on Friday. On Monday, the same jury also found that the victim was vulnerable and Chavez took advantage of a trusted relationship with the victim in order to commit the crimes. According to a Ventura County District Attorney news release, Chavez, who was already a convicted child molester from 1995, sexually abused the young victim at least five times at two locations in Ventura County between October 2001 and October 2002.The young victim, who is now an adult, reported the crimes years later and Chavez was charged and convicted. "The prosecution team is grateful for the extended statute of limitations for child molestation that allowed this prosecution,” said Deputy District Attorney Reber, who prosecuted the case. “But for the tremendous bravery of the victim, justice could not have been done.”Chavez is s...Tailgates, t-shirts and what else to expect at A’s fans ‘reverse boycott’

A day after Stanford University senior Quinn Mathews threw 156 pitches in a complete game win over the University of Texas in the second of a three-game NCAA Super Regional series, the debate was on.Was it wrong to let a college pitcher, one who is likely to be selected in the first five rounds of the MLB Draft this June, throw more pitches in a game than any big leaguer has thrown since knuckleballer Tim Wakefield in 1997?“Before people pass judgment, they don’t know what we know,” Stanford University coach David Esquer said Monday, hours before his team faced the Longhorns at Sunken Diamond for a berth in the College World Series.Mathews has “been trained to throw 125 pitches on a weekly basis. He did go above that, but we took into account that he wasn’t cranking off a majority of sliders and fastballs,” Esquer continued. “He was probably throwing a majority of changeups, and we thought that lowered the stress of the pitch count.”Mathews has been a workhorse for...2 active-duty Marines plead guilty to Jan. 6 charges

The future of the Oakland A’s is in the hands of Nevada lawmakers who still haven’t decided on the team’s request for $380 million in public money for a new ballpark nearly a week after the state’s governor called a special hearing. On the eve of a planned “reverse boycott” by fans to pack the Coliseum and show the world that Oakland has enough local support for a baseball team, the timing — and slow-walking — of the decision in Nevada bears significant weight. If the state Senate decides to subsidize construction costs for the $1.5 billion ballpark, it could be a death knell for Oakland’s foothold in the national sports conversation. But if the team’s ambitious proposal is shot down, the large fan event at Tuesday’s home game might resemble something closer to a parade than a protest. As Monday crept into the late afternoon hours, there was no word from the state Senate, which last week punted on formal deliberations aft...Anchor Steam not brewing Christmas beer, slashing distribution
