Today, some of the fruits of that shed blood are a former Black president, a Black vice president, Black Supreme Court justices, Black athletes with lucrative contracts, very successful Black entertainers and businessmen, and numerous elected Black state officials. We are not guaranteed equal outcomes but equal opportunity to make free choices. SANTA CLARA — Tackle No. 699 of Fred Warner’s career was unlike any other. It came with speed, power, force and a season-opening message.“That was the one you dream of, to set the tone,” Warner said of slamming Najee Harris for a 2-yard loss early in Sunday’s 30-7 win in Pittsburgh. With all due respect to the 49ers’ overall dominance, and without diminishing Drake Jackson’s three-sack outburst in Nick Bosa’s shadow, Warner delivered a hit so fierce it announced the 49ers’ familiar presence as Super Bowl contenders.“I haven’t seen anybody fly to the ball like that. He made the play before he even made the play,” defensive tackle Javon Hargrave said. “You just see him flash so quick. That was crazy. That set the tone.”Teammates were in awe over the sight and the sound of it. Having the NFL’s premier linebacker command this elite defense is critical, especially when Warner’s sidekick, Dre Greenlaw...Guns, water, bathrooms, schoolbooks, weed cafes, magic mushroom bills head to Gov. Newsom’s desk

Lawmakers wrapping up the legislative session this week have sent dozens of bills to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk seeking his signature, covering weighty topics — guns, drugs, education, environment, discrimination, crime and punishment — and some far out stuff too, from marijuana cafes to magic mushrooms. There are a number of potential national firsts that could emerge from the country’s most populous state with Newsom’s approval. His Democratic Party wields supermajority control in the legislature, and the governor must sign, veto or allow bills to become law without his signature by Oct 14.Some potentially significant matters didn’t materialize or make it across the finish line, including an effort to keep insurers from bailing on California homeowners by making it easier for them to raise rates. Other significant bills may go down to the wire as the legislature wraps up Thursday night, including a couple of proposed constitutional amendments oppos...California State University tuition to rise 33% over the next five years

Students enrolled at California State University next fall will see their tuition spike 6% annually for the next five years — an increase that will affect 460,000 students across the Golden State. After hours of emotional testimony, the CSU trustees voted 9-0 for the increase — the first since the 2011-12 academic year — to help narrow a $1.5 billion funding gap facing the 23-campus system.“CSU’s struggle with financial sustainability and predictability under a state-funding-only model just doesn’t work,” said Steve Relyea, the executive vice chancellor and chief financial officer of the CSU, at a board of trustees meeting on Wednesday. “The revenue from the tuition proposal is essential for the CSU to serve its students in the future.”The new tuition increase, scheduled through the 2028-29 academic year, brings the bill for the fall 2024 semester to $6,084, a bump of $342. By the spring 2029 semester, full-time undergraduates wou...Ed Sheeran's crowd will be bigger than Taylor Swift, Beyoncé at Levi's Stadium

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Coming off a lackluster performance in the opener, the Seattle Seahawks are likely to be down both their starting offensive tackles for Sunday’s game at Detroit.Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that both left tackle Charles Cross and right tackle Abraham Lucas were “hurting,” after each suffered injuries in the Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Lucas was placed on injured reserve after Carroll talked to reporters Wednesday, meaning he will miss the next four games and be out until after Seattle’s Week 6 game at Cincinnati. Lucas aggravated a knee injury centered around the patella, while Cross suffered a sprained big toe on his right foot early in the second half and was a spectator the rest of the way in the 30-13 loss to the Rams.“It’s going to be hard for them,” Carroll said before the roster move with Lucas. “It’s going to be a challenge for them.”The injuries to the two second-year players leave Seattle precariously thin at the positions. ...Davis homers, Wade hits winning sac fly as Giants rally past Guardians 6-5 in 10
