Daccord posts shutout as Kraken topple Knights 3-0 in Winter Classic SEATTLE (AP) — As the last one on the ice, Joey Daccord skated in a circle with his goalie stick in the air and the home fans chanting his name in unison. The reaction from the crowd was deserved after the young Seattle Kraken goaltender shut out the defending Stanley Cup champions on one of the NHL’s biggest stages.“It’s truly the coolest thing in the world to have that support from them,” Daccord said. Daccord made 35 saves in his second career shutout, Eeli Tolvanen had a goal and an assist, and the Kraken beat the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 on New Year’s Day in the Winter Classic.A crowd of 47,313 at T-Mobile Park watched the Kraken dominate the reigning Stanley Cup champions in a matchup of the league’s last two expansion franchises. Seattle improved to 7-0-2 in its past nine games and continued its climb into playoff contention after a disappointing start to the season.“To have the opportunity to do this in this ballpark, in front of our home fans, and get the ...

Dane Mizutani: Who’s cares who the Vikings start at quarterback? It doesn’t matter.

Dane Mizutani: Who’s cares who the Vikings start at quarterback? It doesn’t matter. Each time the Vikings have walked off the field over the past month, they have done so without any idea as to who was going to start at quarterback the following week. Was it going to be the journeyman Josh Dobbs? Was it going to be the gunslinger Nick Mullens? Was it going to be the rookie Jaren Hall? This is the life of being forced to rely on a backup. There usually aren’t many good options. That’s been painstakingly obvious over the past month and a half, as the Vikings have benched Dobbs in favor of Mullens, and benched Mullens in favor of Hall. Naturally, the trend continued on New Year’s Eve, as the Vikings benched Hall in favor of Mullens on their way to an embarrassing 33-10 loss at the hands of the Green Bay Packers.Asked who the Vikings would start at quarterback against the Detroit Lions, head coach Kevin O’Connell even left the door open for benching Mullens in favor of Dobbs. Why not? Might as well bring things full circle in what could very well b...

Wild place goaltender Filip Gustavsson on injured reserve The Wild on Monday placed goaltender Filip Gustavsson on injured reserve with a lower body injury. He was hurt in the second period of a 4-2 loss last Saturday at Winnipeg.Minnesota on Sunday recalled goaltender Zane McIntyre from Iowa and he was Marc-Andre Fleury’s backup in a 3-2 loss to the Jets at Xcel Energy Center that afternoon. In 22 games this season, Gustavsson is 10-9-2 with two shutouts, a 2.96 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage. Under NHL rules, players in IR are ineligible to compete in NHL games for a period of not less than seven days.Fleury, who became the fourth goaltender in NHL history to play 1,000 games in Sunday’s loss, is expected to get the lion’s share of starts until Gustavsson returns starting Tuesday night against Calgary at the X.“I hope everything goes well and quickly for him,” Fleury said Sunday. “Gus is a huge part of our team and a good buddy. I guess that’s why there’s two goalies.”Fleury, 39, has 550 career wins, one shy of Patrick R...

Warriors have meeting to address chemistry: ‘We need to get back to playing for each other’ SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors circled up in the locker room following a disappointing loss to the Dallas Mavericks to re-group.The message from team leaders is for players to re-focus on the collective and push individual needs to the back burner. Without throwing any teammates under the bus, some Warriors and coach Steve Kerr insinuated that some players are splintering off to tend to personal agendas. Kerr, at the podium after the team meeting, mentioned some players have a pressure to perform that’s become palpable.“We need to get back to playing for each other,” Gary Payton II said Monday at practice. “I’m pretty sure you can see it on the court, it’s just a disconnect that we have, especially on defense. And I think our offense is predicated on our defense, and it should be the other way around.”Said rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis: “The biggest takeaways from that was our energy and trying to stay positive. Bringing great energy...
