California’s homelessness and affordability problems are rooted in one thing When Californians are asked to identify the biggest problems facing the state, homelessness and the high cost of living consistently rise to the top of the list.While they are not one and the same, experts say both can trace their roots to the same problem: a housing shortage in the Golden State.A recent study conducted by the University of California, San Francisco found that in the six months prior to becoming homeless, survey participants reported a median monthly household income of $960, which amounts to just $11,520 a year.According to Zillow, the median rent for a two-bedroom apartment in California is three times that: $2,869 a month or $34,428 per year.“The results of the study confirm that far too many Californians experience homelessness because they cannot afford housing,” said Dr. Margot Kushel, one of the study’s authors. “I think it’s really important to note how desperately poor people are, and how much it is their poverty and the high housing costs that are leading ...

Driver arrested following car chase from the East Bay to SF, and back again RICHMOND – California Highway Patrol officers on Friday night arrested a driver who led them on a car chase from the East Bay to San Francisco, where he hit a police dog, and then back to the East Bay, according to a spokesman for the agency.The pursuit started around 3:20 p.m. when a Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a stolen Infiniti sedan on westbound Highway 4, said CHP Officer Andrew BarclayBarclay said the driver did not pull over and the deputy pursued him to westbound Interstate 80, where the chase was handed off to a police helicopter. Suspect in custody after chase across Bay Bridge (KRON) -- California Highway Patrol confirmed it was involved in a chase Friday across the Bay Bridge in both directions. The suspect was taken into custody just after 9 p.m. in Richmond. CHP said the pursuit began at about 3:20 p.m. when a Costa Costa County Sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a white Infinity traveling westbound on State Route 4. Police pursued as the car went onto Interstate 80, CHP said. The suspect then went across the Bay Bridge to San Francisco. The deputy chose not to follow the car for the sake of the other drivers on the road, but a sheriff's helicopter followed the vehicle overhead as it drove recklessly and at high speeds, per CHP. The driver eventually crashed into cars in San Francisco, and CHP officers arrived at the scene. Multiple people shot in Oakland, 2 arrested (KRON) -- Multiple people were shot in Oakland on Friday and two people were arrested in connection to the incident, the Oakland Police Department said. OPD responded to the 6200 block of International Boulevard just after 5:30 p.m. for the shooting. Officers found one victim, who was transported to a local hospital for treatment. CHP chases suspect across Bay Bridge Shortly afterward, more victims arrived at local hospitals, OPD said. An investigation revealed that all of them suffered their injuries at the shooting on International Boulevard. All of the victims are in stable condition, according to police. OPD did not specify how many victims were reported. Officers located two people involved in the shootings and arrested them while they were trying to escape using public transportation, according to police. OPD is investigating the shooting.
