The social media giant Meta recently updated the rulebook it uses to censor online discussion of people and groups it deems “dangerous,” according to internal materials obtained by The Intercept. The policy had come under fire in the past for casting an overly wide net that ended up removing legitimate, nonviolent content. The goal of the change is to remove less of this material. In updating the policy, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, also made an internal admission that the policy has censored speech beyond what the company intended.Meta’s “Dangerous Organizations and Individuals,” or DOI, policy is based around a secret blacklist of thousands of people and groups, spanning everything from terrorists and drug cartels to rebel armies and musical acts. For years, the policy prohibited the more than one billion people using Facebook and Instagram from engaging in “praise, support or representation” of anyone on the list. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (15-5)EXPECTATIONS: After back-to-back losses in the NFC title game, nothing short of a Super Bowl appearance could be considered a success in San Francisco. The 49ers have a star-studded roster with seven players who were picked as first-team All-Pros at least once in the past four seasons. The defense led by Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa and linebacker Fred Warner was the stingiest in the league last season and added another interior pass rusher in Javon Hargrave to boost one of the only weak spots. Bosa has been holding out all summer but the Niners are hopeful they will sign him to an extension before the start of the season. Brock Purdy emerged from the last pick in the draft to become a viable starting QB, winning his first seven starts before getting hurt in the NFC championship game and posting an impressive 108 passer rating. With Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle as playmakers, Purdy doesn’t have to do muc...Gary Woodland to have surgery to remove a lesion on his brain

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Wednesday held Rudy Giuliani liable in a defamation lawsuit brought by two Georgia election workers who say they were falsely accused of fraud, entering a default judgment against the former New York City mayor and ordering him to pay tens of thousands of dollars in lawyers’ fees.U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell said the punishment was necessary because Giuliani had ignored his duty as a defendant to turn over information requested by election workers Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea’ ArShaye Moss, as part of their lawsuit.Their complaint from December 2021 accused Giuliani, one of Donald Trump’s lawyers and a confidant of the former Republican president, of defaming them by falsely stating that they had engaged in fraud while counting ballots at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The ruling enables the case to move forward to a trial in federal court in Washington to determine any damages that Giuliani must pay. Tim Henderson | Stateline.org (TNS)Several months after President Joe Biden ended the national emergency for COVID-19, preliminary health data indicates the historic degree to which the pandemic increased death rates nationwide — not just because of the virus itself, but also through the pandemic’s reverberating effects on society.Deaths from vehicle crashes, homicides, suicides and overdoses spiked in many states during the national health emergency that began in January 2020. Deaths of despair, which include people who died by suicide or from an accidental overdose, reached their highest numbers during the first year of the pandemic.
