Ask Amy: Time to sell a gift that has outlived a friendship

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:03:58 GMT

Dear Amy: Eighteen months ago, a friend gave me two highly collectible vintage items. I had always loved them, and she said she didn’t care for them anymore.About a year ago she abruptly moved across the country to live with her boyfriend, and cut all contact with everybody; it’s clear that she has no intention of speaking with me again.I still have the items she gave to me, and while I do like them, since our relationship ended on a sour note I don’t want to keep them.I want to sell them, since they’re quite valuable (about $800 for the pair), but to complicate things I’m really great friends with her brother, “James,” who still lives in my city.James and his sister shared the items in childhood (a gift from their mother), and so I’m feeling torn. Would it be rude of me to sell them? I don’t think he has any interest in keeping them (his sister told me this), and they’d probably just get put in storage.Should I give him a portion of the mon...

My “Simple Saturday” columns focus on basic technique and logical thinking. You may have heard about two boll weevils, brothers they were, who grew up in Alabama. One went to the city and became rich. The other stayed home as a laborer; he was, of course, the lesser of two weevils.Declarer may have a choice of plays and must decide which offers the better chance. At four spades, South ruffed the third club, drew trumps and relied on a heart finesse with his jack. West’s queen won, and the defense also got a diamond.ENTRYAt Trick Four South should play a low diamond from both hands. If East returns a heart, South wins with the king, disdaining a finesse to preserve a dummy entry. He leads to the ace of diamonds, ruffs a diamond, takes the A-K of trumps and ruffs a diamond. South then draws trumps and goes to the ace of hearts for the good fifth diamond. The correct play offers at least an 80 percent chance. The heart finesse was lesser: a 50-50 proposition.DAILY QUEST...

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:03:58 GMT

Q: Are the home 5G options fast enough for me to get rid of my expensive cable internet service?A: In the past, most households were limited to one or two wired internet service options (DSL or Cable) based on where you lived. As 5G coverage continues to grow, switching to a fixed wireless service from Verizon or T-Mobile may be a viable cost-saving alternative to traditional wired internet service providers. Most of the plans are $50 or less per month with no long-term contracts. There are a variety of factors that will ultimately determine if switching makes sense for your specific situation.Service AvailabilityEven though the 5G coverage maps are growing, home 5G isn’t available everywhere just yet.Firstly, check to see if your address qualifies for service with either of the carriers. You should check out Verizon’s availability or T-Mobile’s availability.Your NeedsOnce you’ve determined if the service is available, your next step is to evaluate your current usage. If you are a single...

PARIS (AP) — Reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina pulled out of the French Open before her third-round match on Saturday because she is sick.“I just wanted to give 100%, and obviously I’m far from being 100%,” Rybakina said. “If I cannot breathe, there is no chance I can even run and try to compete.” The No. 4-seeded Rybakina was supposed to face 132nd-ranked Sara Sorribes Tormo in the day’s opening contest on Court Philippe Chatrier. They were scheduled to begin playing at 11:45 a.m. local time, but instead, at that very moment, Rybakina sat down behind the microphone at a news conference to explain why she was withdrawing from the year’s second Grand Slam tournament.Sounding stuffed up, Rybakina explained that she has been running a fever, didn’t sleep well the past two nights and had difficulty breathing during a warmup session Saturday ahead of her match. She said a doctor told her there is a virus going around “here in Paris.”Rybakina, who won each of he...

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Sergei Bobrovsky insists he has not thought about where he would take the Stanley Cup if he and the Florida Panthers win it. He hasn’t been this close before.Countryman Ivan Barbashev has, celebrating in Moscow with the trophy in 2019. After the Cup was banned from going to Russia last year after the nation’s invasion of Ukraine, he figures it might be the same if he and the Vegas Golden Knights beat Bobrovsky and the Panthers in the final.Bobrovsky and Barbashev are the only Russian players left in the NHL playoffs, and they go into the final that begins Saturday in Las Vegas with their focus on hockey and not the war now in its 15th month.“I think it’s not the spot, it’s not the good point to talk about right now,” Bobrovsky said at media day Friday. “Right now we (are) focusing on hockey. It’s not about politics or what’s going on anywhere. It’s a big hockey celebration, Stanley Cup Final. I’ve never been in that spot before, and I want to...
